Welcome to the Ontario Nurses for the Environment Interest Group (ONEIG), an Interest Group of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO).
ONEIG represents RNAO members, including registered nurses (RNs), nurse practitioners (NPs) and nursing students, who wish to work together towards improving the health of our environment. Our objectives include engaging, educating and empowering nurses to take actions as individuals and collectively with ongoing support from membership in ONEIG.
Environmental health issues affect us on a local and global scale. Some examples of issues that ONEIG is committed to addressing include:
Sustainable health care
Environmental health may not be a part of every nurse’s job description, yet the health of the environment impacts us all. Incorporating environmental health issues into the nursing scope of practice is an emerging issue. Nurses benefit from having a forum for open discussion and debate in order to better the connections between the health of the environment and human health. Nurses in Ontario must organize together to have a more effective voice in order to influence all levels of government—including municipally, provincially, nationally and internationally—to enact healthy public policy.
Our time devoted to ONEIG is voluntary because we believe in the importance of the health-environment connection and we hold a strong belief in the need to improve the environment in order to improve the health of our clients and communities. At present there are over 600 ONEIG members— it seems each year more and more nurses and nursing students see this connection and want to get involved. Will you join us? Make sure to join ONEIG when you sign up or renew your annual membership with RNAO.
